They are heartbreaking statistics that are a harsh reality. Last year, over 3318 lives were lost to suicide. Over their lifetime, 13 percent of Australians between the ages of 16 and 85 will seriously consider suicide — that’s one in ten people. Four per cent will plan, and just over three per cent will make an attempt. And sadly, the construction industry has the highest rate of male suicide in Australia.
According to a recent article posted by The Urban Developer, men in the construction industry are 53 per cent more likely to die by suicide than other employed males in this country. That’s more than 190 construction workers every year. And according to figures from Deakin University and the University of Melbourne, a construction worker is lost to suicide every second day.
Here at Premis, we proudly stand by and support issues we are passionate about. We are committed to social responsibility, giving back to our community and supporting community charities.
In line with our focus on supporting better mental health, some of the Premis team recently participated in the “Push for Better Mental Health” Push-up Challenge over a 25-day period. Between them they completed a total of 13,655 push-ups and raised vital funds towards supporting critical mental health services. That resulted in a total of $8,956,750 being raised nationally by all those who participated!
As a company, we also recently chose the charity, LIVIN, to support on a regular basis. This charity was founded on the Gold Coast to honour an amazing man, Dwayne Lally, who, like many others, tragically took his own life after living in silence from a mental illness.
LIVIN is all about living your life at the top and breaking the stigma around mental health. It is also about connecting, supporting and encouraging one another to talk about our feelings and challenges because “It Ain’t Weak to Speak”. Through the development of cutting-edge education programs, apparel and community awareness initiatives, LIVIN aims to create a movement with a brand that makes mental health relatable, and that people can build an enduring relationship with.
We are so proud to be a part of this generational change. We look forward to sharing details of our next fundraising activity, including raising funds for LIVIN, and would be so grateful if you were able to support our fundraising goals in any way. Every little bit helps!
