Premis was engaged by Griffith University to deliver a comprehensive refurbishment of the G12 Level 2 laboratories, transforming them into a Super Lab designed to modernise student teaching and research spaces. The project included the refurbishment of two teaching labs, an analytical lab, and associated support areas, with a focus on improving functionality, increasing capacity, and ensuring compliance with the latest safety and operational standards.
The upgraded spaces include a first-year teaching lab for 96 students and a second- and third-year teaching lab for 60 students, both equipped with multiple fume cupboards and AV-integrated teacher benches. Supporting areas such as the preparation room were reconfigured to include specialised chemical storage, fridges, freezers, and workbenches. Other enhancements included a new AV/Data room, upgraded storage spaces, and external works such as a plant deck, gas cage, and preconditioner plant area. Major building services upgrades, including electrical, HVAC, and fire system improvements, were also completed to accommodate the increased laboratory capacity.
The project was delivered in two stages. The first stage focused on the main refurbishment works, while the second stage, included the installation of preconditioners. Additional challenges included a 16-day mould remediation process, a required redesign of the rear plant deck due to accessibility issues, and fire engineering complexities, all of which were successfully managed to keep the project on track.
Despite these challenges, Premis met the revised deadlines. The Griffith University Super Lab now provides a high-quality learning environment that enhances teaching and research capabilities, reinforcing Premis’ expertise in delivering complex laboratory fitouts.
