Premis was engaged by Arts Queensland to deliver the refurbishment and modernisation of the Judith Wright Arts Centre, a multi-use creative hub in Brisbane, approx. 3000 sqm.
The project involved the upgrade of a 120-year-old building across five levels, including new rehearsal spaces, office fitouts, major structural works, full reroof, services upgrades and installation of a new lift, additional lift shaft from level 4 to 5 and mechanical plant.
Delivered within a live operational environment, the works required careful staging to accommodate ongoing use by performers, students, staff and the public, including active rehearsal spaces and galleries.
Key challenges included complex logistics with a single loading zone, integration of new services within an ageing structure, latent conditions including mould remediation, and coordination of crane and structural works within a constrained urban site.
Premis implemented detailed staging, stakeholder coordination and adaptive programming to manage these challenges and minimise disruption. Upon completion, the project will deliver a significantly enhanced, accessible and contemporary facility for Queensland’s arts community.
