Premis was engaged to deliver a suite of major projects within the Mater Private Hospital in Brisbane, including the new Premium Inpatient Suites, Intensive Care Unit, 8 South Inpatient Ward refurbishment, and the UPS Replacement and Relocation.

Together, these works set a new benchmark in patient care and comfort, combining advanced clinical functionality with the warmth and privacy of a premium stay. The new spaces were designed to enhance the healing experience for patients and their families, where clinical excellence meets the calm, considered design of a five-star environment.

All four projects were delivered concurrently within a fully operational hospital, requiring precise staging, coordination, and strict adherence to infection control protocols. The works involved transforming the eastern wing of Level 8 into a series of luxury patient suites, including interconnecting rooms, a principal suite with private access and a dedicated support suite. Each suite was designed to offer a restorative environment without compromising clinical capability, incorporating refined finishes, bespoke joinery and upgraded medical and entertainment systems.

The existing Intensive Care Unit was relocated from Level 7 to Level 8, creating a contemporary six-bed facility that includes five ICU bays and an isolation room, along with clinical support spaces such as medication and utility rooms, a blood gas and chronos room, staff areas and meeting rooms. The refurbished 8 South ward was upgraded to align with Mater’s premium standard and operational flexibility, converting shared rooms into single patient rooms, installing ICU swing beds, refurbishing ensuites and corridors, and upgrading patient lounges, staff stations, and compliance systems.

The project also included the centralisation and upgrade of the hospital’s Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) system. A new fire-rated room was constructed to house the UPS equipment, complete with ventilation, air-conditioning, and a gas suppression system. The upgraded system now supports critical operations for the ICU, operating theatres, and Premium Suites, ensuring reliability and seamless continuity of power.

Delivering four interrelated projects within a live hospital environment presented a number of challenges. Including integrating new drainage and services into areas directly above operating theatres and recovery zones. Premis worked collaboratively with Mater and relevant stakeholders to manage each challenge efficiently, often completing complex works out of hours to maintain hospital operations.

The completed works represent a significant investment in Mater’s commitment to delivering exceptional patient care. From the refined comfort of the Premium Suites to the advanced ICU and upgraded inpatient ward, every space reflects modern,  contemporary design and functionality. Premis is proud to have delivered these technically complex projects safely, efficiently and to the highest standard of quality.
